How To: Dress For A Conference

Conference’s are a tricky event. They are usually long days filled with a lot of sitting and listening, but also some mingling, networking, and the occasional after-party.  If you aren’t able to race back to a hotel room for a quick change, you will have to carry everything with you. So how does one dress to meet all these requirements?

Here are a 5 great tips I used to keep me comfortable and pain-free during my first Fashion & Beauty Bloggers Conference at Spark Sessions this past weekend.

Layer Lightly: It might be cool in the breakfast room but hot in the seminar room.  Combat these fluctuations in temperature by layering your tops so that you have both sleeveless and full sleeve options.  Light weight layers work best so that if you do get warm, taking off a fine knit sweater and throwing it in your bag will be a lot lighter than lugging around a chunky or heavily embellished jacket.

Be Kind To Your Feet:  Five inch heels may be the perfect addition to your look, but they can completely ruin your conference experience.  You are usually standing or sitting still  a LOT, which is so hard on your feet, legs, and back.  Unless you have a pair of heels that you’d want to sleep in, go for a kitten heel or even a flat to save your soles.

Dress To Impress:  You never know who you might run into at a conference. You could find yourself networking with a big-wig and you definitely don’t want to be regretting your choice of outfit. So, dress up.  If you show up in your Sunday best and it turns out that everyone else is wearing jeans – so be it. It’s a great way to stand out and get noticed!

Bring 2 Bags: Carrying around two bags might seem silly but it’s necessary. Lugging around the biggest, heaviest bag not only looks silly but will tire you out much more quickly.  Instead, bring two smaller bags to distribute the weight as you will likely be adding new swag or information kits.  Being hands-free is handy – especially when networking!

Accessorize: You don’t have to wear a crazy outfit to get noticed.  Statement jewelry speaks volumes but keep the rest of your look clean and simple.

Here are some shots of the conference and of course, what people wore. I met a TON of fabulous ladies who also share the same passion. It was so inspiring!

Have you attended a conference lately? What did you wear? Did you end up having to peel your shoes off your cramped, lifeless feet?
